What is a lactose-free protein?

Lactose-free protein powder is exactly that, a protein powder formula that contains zero lactose. This is the preferred option for individuals who are lactose intolerant or anyone who is sensitive to dairy, this may come in the form of digestion issues and irritated skin.

What are the benefits of lactose-free protein?

With a lactose-free protein, you can expect better digestion and less risk of skin flare-ups. Even though you may not be lactose intolerant, some people still have a negative reaction to dairy, especially when it comes to skin breakouts. If you have multiple food intolerances, especially lactose intolerance, then whey protein isolate and vegan protein are the best options of protein powder for you.

How is a lactose-free protein made?

Whey protein is a natural byproduct of milk, however, this does not mean that all whey protein is doomed to contain lactose. What really matters is the filtration process. Whey protein concentrate (WPC) is the cheapest and most common form of whey protein and has been through the least amount of filtration. It is for this reason, that protein which contains whey protein concentrate is the most susceptible to contain lactose.

On the other hand, whey protein isolate (WPI) and whey protein hydrolysate (WPH) have been through a greater deal of filtration and for this reason, are very low, and in some cases completely void of lactose.

If whey protein will not suffice, then another great option is vegan protein. Vegan protein is plant-based and therefore is absent of lactose.

What is lactose?

Lactose is the sugar which is present in milk, this is formed from galactose as well as glucose. Humans use an enzyme that is produced in the small intestine called “lactase” in order to digest this. However, some people do not produce enough lactase to adequately digest this, this is where the term “lactose intolerance” comes from.

What is the digestion time of lactose-free protein?

The absence of lactose does not make a protein powder digest any quicker, however, it will allow you to digest the formula easier. Digestion time will still be dependent upon the protein powder of your choice, whether it be a fast-acting whey, or extended-release casein, and everything in between.
